  15. Quick Time 3.0 Pro

Quicktime 3.0 was a hard thing to come by, not because of rarity, but far from it.  Everyone was trying to get it.  Apple‚Äôs FTP and mirrors were swamped with people trying to download it.  I heard people on T1s complaining of getting only 1k/sec.  Luckily I got it off of one of the PTI bots at #MacFileZ on IRC.  First copy I got was corrupt so that pissed me off because it was 6.2 megs.  But I finally got the working version.  Installing it was a breeze as in all installs.

First thing I tried was the full screen movie.  This is usually fairly choppy on my machine.  But what do you expect with a 7200/120.  Surprisingly, aside from the pixel‚Äôs being slightly on the blocky side, it was very smooth,  incredible improvement over the previous version.  Its new movie player didn‚Äôt seem to have a lot over the previous version.  Also some of the icons, you may notice, are new.  Many people asked what the difference between the Pro and Regular version.  The Pro version was achieved with a SN# applied to the regular settings control panel.  This gives some fair editing tools.

This is great finally coming out.  Quicktime really smooths out the movies, it has the ability to play almost all the formats, including AVI, as long as you have the right compression/decompression tools.  It comes also with a picture viewer.  It deals mainly in TIFF format.  The viewer doesn‚Äôt really have as many editing tools as things like Graphic Converter and Jpeg view, but it works.  So basically Quicktime is a must get because of the quality it induces.

I almost decided not to put the serial number in this issue, but then we realized that you were just going to find it somewhere else.  So we put it in.  We are hackers, did you expect anything less?  I do think Apple Computer deserves the $30 for making Quicktime 3 Pro so cool, but I also know that the people who read this magazine also dont pay for any of their software.  They usually like to use pirated copies.  So Apple isnt loosing any money from these people.  So for all you pirates, enjoy the Pro version, but I urge you to pay for it.
